SOME DELAY IN CAWTHORNE CASE … SENTENCING OF QUARLES

Developments this week raise expectations that recently re-elected Caddo Parish Commissioner Lynn Cawthorne will soon be held to account for his role in stealing taxpayer money from a summertime federal program to feed school children.

For his theft during the period 2011 through 2015, here is the timeline of federal charges brought against Cawthorne, with links to news releases directly from our U. S. Attorney’s Office:

… On April 26, 2018, Cawthorne and his sister were indicted on eight federal counts of wire fraud in the theft of more than $536,000 from the meal program:

… A February 28, 2019, superseding indictment of Cawthorne added eighteen additional counts related to money-laundering:

… Last month, U. S. Attorney David C. Joseph’s federal grand jury added two counts of tax-filing fraud for Cawthorne:

Earlier this week, KTBS Television’s Vickie Welborn reported that Cawthorne’s attorney says his client prefers to face a “single jury” for all charges brought against him.

Cawthorne’s lawyer is former U. S. Attorney Randy Keene.

Cawthorne was re-elected to another four-year term on the Caddo Parish Commission last October.

Yesterday, in a like federal case, Myrna Quarles of Cotton Valley pleaded guilty before U. S. District Court Judge Donald Walter for theft from the same federal program for children. Quarles was sentenced to 71 months in prison plus three years supervised probation plus restitution of $1,417,461:

Until revelations from Caddo Parish School system whistleblower “Bill Unsharpened,” Cawthorne’s various crimes went unreported to law enforcement and residents. Here is a link to my original reporting in March 2016:
