SHREVEPORT PROPERTY TAX INCREASE? APPARENTLY SO
It is a not-at-all funny fact that in yesterday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Adrian Perkins tried to sneak through a vote on his proposed – and whopping! – $207,000,000 bond issue.
Instead, his stinking attempt was exposed.
Regardless, there is NO mention yet of how much our property taxes are set to rise if this makes it to and passes the intended April 24th citizen vote.
Here is how the broader point is made in today’s Shreveport Times:
“Shreveport City Council Clerk Danielle Farr-Ewing brought the matter up saying Resolution 7, which calls for the special election, was incorrectly placed under Introduction of Resolutions instead of Resolutions for Final Reading.
It’s my understanding from the administration that this needs to be passed today in order to meet the deadline for the special election to take place,” Farr-Ewing told the council, adding that the item could be a one-reader, it’s just that it was placed in the wrong section.”
Councilman John Nickelson, who has previously called for the bond issue, caught Perkins and acted as necessary to instead hold a special Council meeting this coming Friday to set up this latest intended hammering of property owners.
THE REST OF THE STORY
For those who may not remember, Shreveport voters killed this money-grab’s first attempt in November 2019. That one totaled a paltry $188,000,000 worth of pork and corruption.
It is a sad fact that “bond issue” in Shreveport is a reference to a lot of property owners’ money being auto-magically handed over to the aforementioned special interests and City Hall doers.
I know all the related facts by heart … and have successfully opposed all such attempts at new property taxes – City Hall, Caddo Commission, Caddo School Board – for more years than I care to remember.
OH! … ABOUT THAT POPULATION DIVE …
As I have very recently detailed, and according to the U. S. Census Bureau, Shreveport has lost just under 14,000 residents in the past ten years … a loudly alarming loss of almost 7% in only the past ten years: from 200,976 to 187,112.
OH! ABOUT THAT HIDDEN FEDERAL WINDFALL …
Some more of the “mayor’s” under-the-table junk is failing to tell Shreveporters how much money Joe Biden / Nancy Pelosi, et al, are sending the City in the next Covid-19 windfall. It is soon coming, specifically to “assist” local governments such as ours. Though he knows, our “mayor” is not mentioning the gonna-be amount. (Too, the City has already scored one such windfall via Covid-19.)
OH! ABOUT THOSE POLICE, FIRE AND SANITATION WORKERS …
No matter who the “mayor” has picked to enrich with this concoction, the screaming fact is that Shreveport frontline sanitation and public safety workers need more money. It cannot come from bond issues. It should and must come from existing revenue no longer needed as its population sinks like a rock.
Heck, Shreveport may well be on life support by the time this “mayor” leaves and takes his ways of doing our business with him.
