To be honest, I hesitate in writing and posting this news, lest it somehow be reversed or otherwise proved wrong.

It does seem, regardless, that Shreveport city officials have passed a budget for next year with NO additional taxes … or “fees” … or levies … or any such.

When Mayor Tyler, at the Council meeting on November 22nd, dressed down the City Council and local residents after her garbage collection tax failed, other tax increases were believed by many to be her next order of business.

Apparently, the public pressure applied to council members who were originally for the tax was sufficient to kill it, at least for this budget cycle.

The new budget is said to include 7.5% less spending than this year. Given how much the economy has recently contracted, and how much population loss the city has been suffering, such a reduction seems to me to be nothing more than common sense.

I thank all who joined in the effort to oppose the garbage collection tax – a “fee” according to the mayor, a term necessary to prevent a public vote on the issue – especially in their participation in the aforementioned City Council meeting last month.

We seem to have saved ourselves $144 a year that new tax would have cost us … ‘nice little Christmas gift to ourselves!
