Week 7 HIgh School Football Preview
The stretch run begins tonight for the 2017 high school football regular season. With only 4 games left, district play is heating up and teams are trying to position themselves for playoff runs.
The action of week 7 started last night in a thrilling Benton/North Desoto 1-4A matchup. Benton pulled out a 34-33 road victory by the skin of its teeth when North Desoto scored a touchdown on a 49 yard pass from QB Jaden Procell to Maguire Parker with 2:11 left but missed the critical extra point. Benton was able to run the clock out in their final possession to hold on for victory. Benton moves to 7-0 on the season and is currently ranked #2 in class 4A in Louisiana. This was an encouraging effort for Coach Scott Abernathy’s North Desoto Griffins to almost upset Benton but it still has to be frustrating to lose the game on a missed extra point.
In district 1-5A action, the Haughton Buccaneers defeated Captain Shreve 24-14 in the Brotherton Bowl pitting Haughton head coach Jason Brotherton against Captain Shreve Offensive Co-Ordinator Koy Brotherton. Haughton is having a strong season led by Quarterback Cameron Townsend, Running Back/Linebacker Levonta Gipson and a good set of wide receivers. The Buccaneers certainly have a shot to end up in 2nd place in the district. After a 3-0 start, Captain Shreve has lost 4 in a row. QB Lucas Grubb is doing his best to play through a knee injury that is hampering him.
In other local action, Calvary smashed Lakeside 69-15 for the Cavs 2nd straight win. Calvary is about to reap the benefits of playing such a tough early season schedule and will have a good shot to make a run to the Superdome. Led by Quarterback Cade Hart, Running Back Kordavian Washington and WR Tank Davis, this team can light the scoreboard up on a weekly basis. Lakeside has been an amazing turnaround story going from 0-10 last year to 5-2 this season but they had no chance against the Calvary firepower last night, Northwood continued its stellar offensive play with a 42-14 win over Huntington. Led by sophomore Quarterback Luke Bogan, Northwood continues to be the surprise team of the area this season and has a great chance to end up in 2nd place in 1-4A behind Benton.
In District 1-5A tonight, Southwood travels to Evangel. This game is not a fair fight and the Eagles will win by as many points as they want. Evangel’s defense continues to dominate led by Defensive End Elijah Chapman, Linebacker Micah Baskerville and Safety Ar’Darius Washington. The only touchdown Airline scored in last week’s 44-7 Evangel win was on an interception return. Evangel will continue to roll through 1-5A and have a shot at back to back state championships.
The biggest game of the night is a 1-5A battle between Parkway and Byrd at Lee Hedges Stadium in Shreveport. Parkway has scored 91 points the last 2 games and is back on the winning path after suffering season ending injuries to their superstar combo of Quarterback Justin Rogers and Wide Receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. early in the season. Running Back EJ Williams has over 300 yards rushing and 8 touchdowns in the last 2 games. Sophomore Quarterback Ar’mani Larry continues to improve as well. A lot of credit has to go to Panthers offensive co-ordinator Ragan Smith for adapting this offense to more of a spread rushing attack after the key injuries. Byrd enters this game off back to back wins as well and is 4-2 on the season. Coach Mike Suggs will have his team ready to play and this one could go down to the wire.
Airline travels to Springhill to play North Webster in a non-district matchup tonight. Junior Quarterback Brad Fream is out for the Vikings with a separated left shoulder and his status is in question for the rest of the season. Backup quarterback Jordan Gladney will have to fill his shoes. North Webster is 2-4 on the season but does have a good defense. Airline should win this game behind defensive co-ordinator Seth Stowell’s aggressive defense. As always, you can listen to this game with myself on the call at 7pm on 100.7 FM/1340 AM The Ticket.
Other matchups to follow in the area tonight are 1-4A battles between BTW and Bossier as well as Minden traveling to the Indy Bowl to play Woodlawn. A 3-3 Loyola Flyers squad hosts 5-1 St. Mary’s at Messmer Stadium in Shtreveport too. I will be back with a recap of week 7 over the weekend.
