Week 3 High School Football Preview
Week 3 of the 2017 high school football season in Shreveport and Bossier City is already off to a controversial start as Trinity Christian (Dallas, TX) has cancelled their highly anticipated Friday night game at Evangel for unknown reasons. There was a lot of excitement in the Shreveport area to see Deion Sanders son play QB at Evangel with Deion calling the plays but the game will not happen. Evangel (1-1) will now only play 8 regular season games this fall and is still dealing with the loss of star Defensive Tackle Davin Cotton for the season.
Two games will played in the area Thursday night. Woodlawn bounced back from a 1 point loss to Captain Shreve last week to defeat Haughton 32-24 at Independence Stadium. Woodlawn (2-1) is the defending District 1-4A champion and is led by RB Travisky Mosley who is getting some recruiting attention. The Captain Shreve Gators moved to 3-0 this season with a 34-8 win over Huntington at Lee Hedges Stadium. WR Steven Smith had 3 touchdowns in the game and is off to a huge start this season.
Loyola (1-1) travels to Monroe to play St. Frederick in the Bishop’s Cup tonight at 7pm. This game is always hotly contested as the battle of the two Catholic private schools in North Louisiana. The Flyers defeated West Ouachita 20-14 last week and showed off a new passing game.
The Airline Vikings (2-0) travel to Ruston to take on the Bearcats in a 5A playoff team battle tonight. Coach Bo Meeks was a star QB at Ruston in his high school days and there’s no doubt this game has special meaning to him. Last year, Ruston ran a punt back for a touchdown late in the 4th quarter to defeat the Vikings 29-19 in Bossier. This is a stiff early season test on the road for Airline. This game will be live on 100.7 FM/1340 AM The Ticket with myself on the call at 7pm.
The reeling Parkway Panthers (1-1) travel to Pulaski, Ark without their star QB and WR who are both done for the season. Pulaski is famous for never punting the ball on 4th down. This should be a wild affair but will be tough for the Panthers to win on the road. The Byrd Yellow Jackets (2-0) are traveling to the south Louisiana to take on Sulphur at their new palace of a stadium. Coach Mike Suggs has Byrd off to a great start following a disappointing 2016 season. Fullback Charlie Barham has been an early season star.
The Calvary Cavs travel to Bastrop in northeast Louisiana for a tough road game. Calvary is off to an 0-2 start but I expect them to be a force in district and the playoffs led by Head Coach Rodney Guin, QB Cade Hart, RB Kordavian Washington and WR Tank Davis. They play a tough early season schedule to prepare them for the stretch run. Other matchups in the area to follow tonight are Minden at North Webster, BTW at Green Oaks in the Soul Bowl and Natchitoches Central at Southwood.
