Description

Blues legend Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter was born on a plantation in 1885 in Mooringsport, La., just outside of Shreveport. He became known as “King of the 12-String Blues” and wrote many timeless songs, among the most notable of which are “Goodnight Irene” and “House of the Rising Sun.” A life-sized statue of Ledbetter stands at Texas and Marshall Streets in downtown Shreveport, pointing towards a neighborhood that is named in his honor, Ledbetter Heights. He died in 1949 and was interred in the cemetery of Shiloh Baptist Church in Mooringsport, about 13 miles outside of Shreveport.
