High School Football Season Is Upon Us!
High school football jamborees are all over the Shreveport/Bossier City area tonight as teams prepare for the season opener next Friday. The Lions Club is sponsoring their annual event at Airline Stadium in Bossier with six local teams featured in the action. Here’s the schedule:
6:00 Bossier vs. Plain Dealing
7:30 Airline vs. Haughton
9:00 Parkway vs. Benton
The Lions Club has been sponsoring this event for quite some time and it generates a great turnout yearly. After being rained out last year, the Bossier football community is excited to see these six teams square off in their final pre-season tune-ups. Here are the storylines to watch tonight:
- What will Plain Dealing look like without jack of all trades Keldrick Carper whose now at Texas A&M?
- Will Bossier’s old school Wing T offense be consistent enough?
- How has Airline star WR Coby McGee’s knee injury healed?
- Will Haughton be able to compete in brutally tough District 1-5A?
- What will new Parkway Coach Neal May’s Panthers look like as he takes over for David Feaster?
- Parkway superstar QB Justin Rogers (TCU Commit) and WR Torrace Marshall (#1 WR in nation) begin their senior seasons.
- Will Benton whose a strong 4A school in their own right be able to compete with Parkway?
Captain Shreve and Byrd will battle at Captain Shreve Field tonight as well. The Gators beat Byrd last year for the first time in forever. Coming off a rare difficult season, what will Coach Mike Suggs Byrd Yellow Jackets look like in 2017? Injuries, youth and attrition hurt them badly last season but lots of young players got some experience. Will Byrd rebound from a 7-8 win season or will they be around .500 again? Captain Shreve was one of the surprise teams in this area last season before falling in the playoffs to Parkway in the first round. Will they be able to sustain success?
Calvary is taking on 1A power Oak Grove for their jamboree. There’s a lot of buzz around the school with former Haughton coach Rodney Guin taking over this season. Calvary returns a dynamic one-two punch with sophomore QB Cade Hart who threw for over 3,000 yards as a freshman and senior RB Kordavian Washington who lit up the stats sheet last year. Calvary had trouble stopping teams last year and played lots of shootouts. Will their defense take a step forward to give them a shot at a 3rd state championship?
Defending Division 1 State Champion Evangel is hosting Texas High (Texarkana, TX) tonight. This Evangel defense has potential to go down as the best in the history of North Louisiana. They return everyone from last year’s state championship team and outscored District 1-5A foes 330-20 last season. The Eagles defense currently has 3 players committed to LSU and 1 to Oklahoma State on their starting 11! The Eagles are young on offense and better get ready in a hurry as they open the season taking on national powers East St. Louis and Allen (TX) who beat them 45-10 in week 1 last season. Will Evangel be able to win back to back state titles in the tough Division 1? I certainly would not doubt Coach Byron Dawson and this stellar defense.
High school football season begins next Thursday Aug 31st in a much anticipated battle between Byrd and Calvary. I will have a preview of week 1’s games up in the middle of next week. I hope everyone gets out and enjoys some exciting high school football action in the area tonight!
