Ex-deputy accused of smuggling cellphones into jail
DONALDSONVILLE, La. (AP) — A former deputy with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office has been arrested on three counts of malfeasance and three counts of introduction of contraband to a penal institution.
Sheriff Jeff Wiley said in a news release received by The Advocate (http://bit.ly/2henoI8) the investigation began on Nov. 30 after officials received an anonymous tip that Kevin Wald allegedly smuggled contraband, specifically cellphones, into the Ascension Parish Jail on at least two occasions.
Wald was employed by the sheriff’s office as a corrections officer in 2007 and most recently worked in the Ascension Parish Jail as a corrections supervisor. Wiley says Wald was terminated Thursday afternoon.
As of Thursday night, Wald remained incarcerated in the parish jail where he was awaiting bond.
Online jail records do not list an attorney for him.
